Production Lumière 2021

Background to Lumière Scheme

Previously the Design Lumière Scheme has funded a successful applicant for a six-month period during which they have been able to assist a range of established designers in a number of venues, working in an assistant capacity on a diverse range of new productions. It’s a scheme designed to create a pathway for lighting practitioners into the world of live performance and to encourage and develop the roles of assistant and associate Lighting Designers.

With our new name, the ALPD, we are bringing the Lumière Scheme to the Production roles within the lighting team - a pathway scheme for emerging lighting technicians in the theatre industry, focusing on two strands - Production Electrics and Lighting Programming.

Production Lumière 2021

We are running an online pilot scheme this autumn. This is a virtual scheme as we acknowledge the on-going uncertainty of placing extra people into teams working within Covid cohorts and testing regimes as the theatre industry reopens.

Five emerging lighting practitioners will be chosen from applications and then will be paired with 5 professional mentors, representing a wide spectrum of work, for a series of workshops, discussions and masterclasses.

It is an exciting opportunity that gives Lumières direct access to a Production Electrician or Programmer and to inspire conversations about the role, the craft and the life.

We will begin the Scheme on Thursday 16th September with a group online conversation for everyone involved. This will be followed by an initial individual session with your mentor. There will then be a series of masterclasses focused on the two strands of the scheme: Production Electrics and Lighting Programming - these sessions will be open to all Lumières enrolled on the scheme.  Throughout the masterclass weeks, your individual mentor will be your point of contact for any follow-up questions from the topics discussed. The last session will be a final individual session with your professional mentor, a chance to reflect on what you’ve learnt over the scheme and develop a plan for building on this experience. We will then conclude with a virtual social and networking event.

Although this is a ‘virtual’ project, we very much hope that there will be some real professional relationships established through the Scheme that may come to fruition when we all get back to work.

We welcome Production Lumière applications from anyone who has a minimum of one years’ professional experience in the industry. The ALPD are committed to inclusivity and are actively encouraging applications from those currently under-represented in the UK theatre industry. We would also like to encourage applicants who may have moved away from theatre for various reasons and want to return to the industry. For this opportunity we cannot consider anyone who is currently in full time education.

Participating Lumières and professional mentors will both receive a micro bursary of £175.00. Even during this difficult time for our industry we want to invest, support and encourage you in your practice at this time.

The ALPD embraces and encourages diversity in many forms and are committed to inclusivity among our community members, including all members, associates and collaborators. We define diversity as people of different backgrounds, races, nationalities, genders, sexual orientations, beliefs, religions, socio-economic statuses, and more, and inclusivity as an approach where we respect, welcome, encourage, and engage diverse perspectives. Our strength and success as an organisation is built on the foundation of a wide range of perspectives and experiences.
