New Technology Showcase – Round Up

Last month, the New Technology Showcase made a much-anticipated return to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Run by both White Light and the ALPD, the event provides top industry professionals and those currently in formal training with an opportunity to explore and compare the latest lighting technology available on the market.

In total, there were over thirty products available and our Customer Services Key Account Manager Leo Humphrey has picked a select few which stood out to him in particular and which he believes will be making a big impact on the industry in the coming months.

Martin MAC Aura PXL

Many designers draw on Martin MAC products for their multi-lens and backlight technology, reliability and quality performance. The Aura PXL is the latest product to add to an already impressive inventory, significantly higher intensity and a tighter beam making it bigger and brighter than the MAC Aura yet it manages to have a smaller face and less busy lens look when compared to the MAC Quantum Wash. It is also the first wash light in the market to feature individual pixel control for main beam pixels and Aura backlight with full control via DMX, Art-Net and sACN, as well as with Martin´s very own creative P3 video protocol.

One particular feature that stood out to me was the fact that the PXLs bigger ‘bubbles’ provided a more appealing look which resulted in beautiful wide wash fields, as demonstrated at the showcase. Similarly, the compact size and low weight, coupled with the simple set-up and easy-to-use control options, make it a very attractive product for those working in television, concert touring and even corporate events.

ETC Series 3 Lustrs

When the Series 3 LEDs were first announced, we were told that they were the result of over a decade of research. I’m delighted to say that, having seen and used the product for myself, this really does show.  Simply put, the Source Four LED Series 3 adds the new Deep Red LED Chip, increasing the colour Gamut, but crucially, improving colour rendition, particularly for all skin tones. XDLT Lenses allow users to create an impressive range of nuanced colours and incredible brightness even the longest throws.

The product also has the additional bonus of wireless DMX/RDM which is integrated via City Theatrical’s Multiverse® protocol, and easy NFC configuration using your mobile device and ETC’s Set Light app.

There’s one array for emotional colours and soft pastels and a second for the widest range of whites. Lustr X8 brings a new depth to your colours and, in turn, emotion to your stage. Designers know that the best white light is made of the richest colours which is why the tuneable Daylight HDR redefines how you use white light.

Chauvet Colour Strike M

Color STRIKE M is an IP65 rated motorized strobe/wash with two ultra-bright, white light tube elements surrounded by an electrifying, color-mixing, and pixel-mappable face.

This versatile strobe light can double as a wash fixture with 180° tilt range to throw bright saturated color wherever you need. The IP65 casing protects the fixture from any environmental factors or weather and has two omega-bracket attachments so you can mount the fixture horizontally or vertically without any hassle.

Multiple programming personalities give you a varying amount of control from simple set ups with a multitude of built-in effects, or wider control options to take advantage of the pixel-mappable zones: 14 in the RGB face and 28 in the two tube elements.

Built-in alignment pins insure perfectly straight linear arrays to create massive arrangements. DMX, Art-net, and sACN control. All LEDs feature 16-bit dimming for smooth fades and Pulse Width Modulation for on-camera use.

GLP impression X5

The GLP impression X5 uses 19 powerful 40 Watt RGBL LED’s to give an incredible output with increased colour gamut vs the previous incarnation, the X4.

GLP’s new iQ.Gamut calibration algorithm ensures the impression X5 creates clean white points with CRI 90 at 6,500 K and the ability to switch to other fixed colour temperatures instantly, all calibrated exactly to the black body line. The impression X5 offers a 16:1 range running from 3.5° to 60° with homogenous light distribution across its entire range.  A new front face with a circular design offers a fresh modern look, a round aperture and has been designed to include geometric patterns for great looking Pixel mapping effects.

The fixture comes complete with an extensive feature package, including a virtual colour wheel with 64 referenced LEE Filters, a new Colour Quality Control, Magenta / Green Correction, a Tungsten Simulation and Effect Channel and a double layer effect option. Featuring GLP’s trademark baseless design, the impression X5 weighs just 13.3Kg and its design also allows static front accessories or even electromechanical effect modules to be attached.

The impression X5 can also be controlled via DMX, ArtNet or sACN and can be set up using Near Field Control.
