UK Live Performance Production Declares Climate & Biodiversity Emergency

The ABTT recently launched LIVE PERFORMANCE PRODUCTION DECLARES – a public declaration of our planet’s environmental crises and a commitment from everyone working in the presentation of live performance, operating a place of entertainment or supplying productions to take positive action in response to climate breakdown and biodiversity collapse. As an organisation always considering the environmental impact of our work and the ways in which we can make our operation as sustainable as possible, we are delighted to be one of the first signatories for this vital declaration.

Whilst we are currently not sure as to when live events will return, this declaration wants to ensure that, when they do, every event is run as resourcefully as possible. In an industry that often gets criticised for its carbon footprint, the ABTT wants us all now, as a collective, to think about how we will run our buildings, create our performances as well as source and manage our resources in order to serve our communities as indivisible elements of a larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system. As one of the sectors that has a huge influence on both the economical and social fabric of the UK, Live Performance Production must lead the way in promoting the transformation to a circular economic model by demonstrating positive measures in its own practice. The declaration is suggesting that, for everyone working in the presentation of live performance, operating a place of entertainment or supplying productions, they must try and do so without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries. The research, technology and solutions exist for us to begin this transformation to a circular model now, but there must be a collective will from across the industry in order to present live performance in a way that has a more positive impact on the world around us.

The declaration can be read in full and signed here.

WL’s Managing Director Bryan Raven comments: “We are delighted to be backing this incredibly important declaration and thank the ABTT for pursuing this worthy cause within the midst of everything else that is currently happening. These are strange and uncertain times and, in all honesty, we are unsure what the fabric of live events will look like when they return. That said, a large part of getting back on our feet will be about ensuring we adhere to good practice and that what we are helping to create on-stage has an equally positive effect off it. The declaration put forward is ambitious yet also clear and practical and we look forward to many other organisations joining us in our continued efforts to make our industry as environmentally friendly as possible”.
