National Apprenticeship Week Profile: Beth Gayler

As part of this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, we are going to be profiling each of our current cohort over the next four days; providing you with an insight into who they are, why they applied for the scheme and what they hope to gain from it.

Today’s profile focuses on Beth Gayler.

Tell us a little bit about your background…

I grew up in Wandsworth, South West London, where I still live with my parents and younger brother. After completing my GCSEs, I decided to study for a national diploma in outdoor sports as I wanted to become a water sports instructor. At the same time, I was also training to become a ski instructor. Unfortunately, I damaged my knee quite severely and this prevented me from continuing with my previously chosen career.

At what age did you decide that you were interested in the ‘technical’ world?

While I was recovering from my knee operation, I started to attend more and more gigs. I’d always been passionate about music and so decided to look for some opportunities to get involved with the technical side. After some research, I managed to find a venue that was willing to teach me how to become a sound engineer.

How did you find out about the WL Apprenticeship?

I’d been interested in starting an apprenticeship for a while but, due to Covid and the various restrictions, was unable to. Then one night, a friend who had previously completed the Apprenticeship at the Roundhouse saw an advert for the WL Apprentice Scheme and sent it across, thinking I might be interested. The only problem was she had sent it the evening before the applications closed! So, as you can imagine, I didn’t get too much sleep that night!

What was your first impression of WL?

My first impression of when I arrived at WL for the interview was: “Oh my God, this place is absolutely massive!”. However, I also remember getting a really good feeling from the people I met and seeing how the company was run, which further confirmed this was the right course for me.

How has the apprenticeship been so far?

The Apprenticeship scheme has been really good and I’m certainly learning a lot. I have worked in three departments so far and am currently in Bench which I’m very much enjoying.

What do you hope the apprenticeship will offer you in the long-run?

In the long-run, I hope the scheme will provide me with a good understanding and grounding of all the aspects involved within the creative technician role. Ultimately, I would like to continue developing my knowledge, experience and hopefully succeed in this industry.
