As the spotlight of the Knight of Illumination awards moves from centre stage for another year, the Association of Lighting Designers (ALD) can proudly acknowledge the success of its members in the winning line-ups across all the disciplines of live performance lighting.

ALD Professional Members Michael Hulls and Mark Henderson won awards for their significant works in dance and theatre respectively, and Bernie Davis was awarded for his work on the televised BBC Proms Season 2015/2016. ALD Fellow Patrick Woodroffe won in the Concert Touring category for his iconic use of light on Adele’s 2016 live tour.

ALD Honorary Member John Offord received the Enrico Caironi Award for Lifetime Recognition for his unstinting support of and influence upon the industry.

Since its inception, the Knight of Illumination Awards has raised the awareness, understanding and appreciation of lighting design, whether in theatre, television or concert and the Association of Lighting Designers is proud to be an organiser of these awards.

The ultimate aim of the association is to raise the professional status of the lighting and video / projection designer as members of the creative production team, to protect its membership, to liaise on their behalf with manufacturers when problems are experienced and to undertake a whole host of other beneficial activities.

From early sponsorship and bursaries to training opportunities, mentorship and awards against a solid backbone of networking and communication, the association offers strength and unity to its 850 largely individual members. 

The ALD provides a vital support network for its members at every stage and level of their careers in lighting and video projection. From their first footsteps as students to their confident strides as accomplished and award-winning lighting artists, ALD members are supported in their careers by the unceasing work of the ALD.
