Lighting Designer Jamie Platt has praised the performance of White Light's (WL) new Chauvet Maverick Silens 1X Profile fixtures following their debut use on Here Comes J. Edgar!, a fast-paced comedy musical staged at the King's Head Theatre.
Charting the extraordinary and often problematic life of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, Here Comes J. Edgar! takes audiences on a whirlwind journey through dozens of scenes and musical numbers. Presented through the lens of a 1950s Broadway musical, the production demanded a lighting design capable of transforming a compact set into a multitude of locations and moods.
For Lighting Designer Jamie Platt, versatility was essential.
"There are over 30 scenes and a similar number of musical numbers, all played out on a rather static set," explains Platt, "so I knew the lighting would have to play a huge part in dictating where we were. We were playing in the King's Head Theatre, where the stage is just 4m wide and 5m deep, so we needed to maximise every inch of space."
To meet these creative and technical demands, Platt incorporated WL's newly available Chauvet Maverick Silens 1X Profile fixtures into the lighting rig. Designed to offer the capabilities of a larger moving profile in a more compact format, the fixtures provided a practical solution for a venue where every centimetre of rigging space mattered.
Platt comments: "I've been on the hunt for a small moving profile unit that is suitable for the requirements of an off-West End-sized theatre for a while now. When fellow LD and Chauvet representative Nic Farman demoed the Maverick Silens 1X Profile to me, I knew I wanted to try it out. I'm thrilled WL now has them in stock."
One of the key attractions was the fixture's promise of powerful functionality without compromising performance or audience experience. With spectators seated close to the stage and lighting rig, fixture noise was a critical consideration.
The results exceeded expectations.
"When the rig was powered off we never had that awkward silence when you realise how quiet the room should be." says Platt. "I've had a very grateful sound designer."
Beyond its exceptionally quiet operation, the Maverick Silens 1X Profile also delivered creatively. Platt highlighted the fixture's colour system, frost effects and feature set, which enabled him to realise nuanced visual ideas throughout the production.
"I'm amazed at how much they've packed into the body of the unit," he explains. "I needed to show a swimming pool onstage in Here Comes J. Edgar!, and by combining the animation wheel, a breakup gobo and some colour, I managed to get an incredibly convincing effect without sacrificing too much output."
The fixture's compact footprint proved equally valuable during the planning and rigging process.
"To essentially have the same range of options you'd find in a full-sized moving light at half the size and a fraction of the weight was so useful to me," says Platt. "I could squeeze more units in while keeping the throw distance as far as possible, without having to worry about overloading the theatre's lighting bars."
For Platt, however, the real measure of any fixture is how effectively it supports the storytelling.
"The design should always come from your own ideas, and if you've selected the right lights, the rig will be capable of achieving what you have in your head," he explains. "On Here Comes J. Edgar!, I found that the Silens was always able to accomplish what I was envisioning."
That flexibility allowed the lighting design to support the production's ambitious narrative, helping define locations and transitions without major scenic changes. The result was a lighting system that worked seamlessly with the wider creative team and enabled the production's vision to be fully realised.
Looking ahead, Platt believes the Maverick Silens 1X Profile will become a valuable tool for designers working in smaller venues and space-constrained environments.
"They're great units for smaller-scale shows. Being able to nestle such a capable unit into a busy rig is a joy." he says.
