B Corp Month People Profiles: Elizabeth Rumsey

It’s currently B Corp Month – a time in which organisations from across the world come together and celebrate everything it means to be a B Corp. As a proud B Corp ourselves, we are always celebrating our sustainability achievements yet just as important as these are the people who actually make up our organisation.

As such, throughout this B Corp month, we will be profiling various staff members throughout the business to hear a bit about them, their role at White Light (WL) and how they feel they contribute to the wider company as a whole. Today, we’re speaking to Elizabeth Rumsey, who works as a Team Leader in our Sales Team.

Hi Elizabeth! So tell us a bit about your professional background? Have you always worked in the industry?

My working career actually started aged 16 in Pizza Hut Croydon. I then continued to work part time in a variety of customer-facing roles in service and retail whilst completing my A Levels and BA Honours. My interest in the industry really began when I went to study Audio Production at university.

After graduating, I did a handful of freelanance work before realising late nights and weekends weren’t for me, and that I am much better suited to an office environment, working a role that still supports the industry that I am passionate about. I started at WL as a Junior Account Handler, and through the years progressed into the role of Sales Team Leader.

Since I first joined, I have learnt so much, from growing my skills as an Account Handler to learning more about lighting; something I could never have imagined at the start of my audio course.

What does your current role at WL entail day-to-day? How does this feed into the wider company?

The key aspects of my day are communicating with our customers, assessing their needs and finding the best solution for them.  Sometimes this can be as simple as informing them about a gel’s availability and other times it can be more complicated, like helping to find the right solution for a venue’s LED upgrade or finding an alternative product that will meet a lighting designer’s needs within specific timeframe.

As a Team Leader, another aspect to my role is helping train the WL Sales team and providing them with the tools and guidance to grow within their own roles.

What do you like about your role?

I love being able to help our customers! When we manage to help support people in the creative events industry (across all sectors) and see the results, then this truly brings a smile to my face. I also love the problem-solving aspect of finding the right puzzle piece for the right project.

That said, I think what I like the most is my team. It is great to work with so many people who all share the common goal of supporting the live events industry and who all work so hard to help creatives achieve their vision.

Do you have a particularly memorable project that you’ve worked on during your time at WL?

I’ve been extremely fortunate in that I’ve worked on many projects since starting here, and so there are loads that come to mind! A few highlights include Mamma Mia: The Party!, The Hexagon in Reading as well as arranging the logistics for the multiple Trafalgar Theatre Group venues over the last panto season.
