Sherry Coenen (Lighting Designer)
Award winning lighting designer Sherry Coenen works across the UK and US. She has a BFA in Lighting Design from the University of Miami and is a member of APLD.
Theatre includes: XXXMas Carol (Wales Millennium Centre), Spitlip’s Operation Mincemeat (New Diorama Theatre, Southwark Playhouse and Riverside Studios – nominated for Knights of Illumination award 2019), Frankenstein (Beatbox Academy at BAC, Knights of Illumination winner 2019), The Singing Mermaid (Little Angel Theatre), Izindava (UK Tour), Brigitte Aphrodite’s Parakeet (Paines Plough Roundabout, Summerhall, Edinburgh Festival Fringe), Christopher Brett Bailey’s This is How We Die (UK Tour), The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾ (Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch), Skin Tight (Park90), CELL (UK Tour), Conquest of the South Pole (Arcola), These Trees are Made of Blood (Arcola), Brrr! A jagged, abstract scaffold of fluorescent lighting tubes hangs overhead, illuminated in Sherry Coenen’s bold lighting to clearly mark the frequent jumps between different times and locations. Pale steely blue represents a hospital, deeper indigo suggests night-time streets and vivid magenta implies bars and restaurants. A burnished gold glow filters in during passages when Tara vents her unspoken rage, cutting out when she resumes the calm, collected demeanour she is forced to project in order to be taken seriously. In the play’s most affecting sequence, Day gives a crushing speech under brilliant daffodil-yellow dappling, symbolising the joy that was drained from her life in a single sickening act of sexual violence.

At the end of Christopher Brett Bailey’s performance of This is how we die the audience are subjected to – and it is a case of being subjected to rather than being passive observers of – a sonic assault that is best imagined as the sound of an imploding, decaying universe and the tentative hope that something new and beautiful can rise from the fading flickering light. The stage lights turn their impassive bulbs on the audience, bathing the observers in a harsh, unforgiving light whilst ear-shattering, fuzzy rhythms rise and fall, roll and repeat, looping and overlaying motifs amongst discordant sounds.
